CHAMPIONSHIP FAQs

What happens if there is a tie in the standings?

If, following the completion of regular season play, there are ties among the teams in the standings, the following tiebreakers shall be used to determine playoff seeding and/or postseason participation.

The teams with the highest winning percentages will be seeded one through four. If there are any ties among the teams with the four highest winning percentages, the following tiebreakers should be utilized to break all ties:

  1. Match points totals. Teams will be assigned point totals during the regular season based on the scores of each match. Points are assigned as follows:
      1. 3 points for winning a match by the score of 3-0 or 3-1
      2. 2 points for winning a match by the score of 3-2
      3. 1 point for losing a match by the score of 2-3
  2. Head-to-head results for all matches played amongst the tied teams
  3. Sets ratio (Sets won divided by sets lost) for regular season matches only
  4. Points ratio (Points won divided by points lost) for regular season matches only
  5. Coin toss

In the event the tiebreakers are reduced to a coin toss, each team involved would be permitted to have a representative as part of the coin toss process, which will be held in person with league representatives or via video meeting in a timely manner the same day as the last regular season match is final.

If more than two teams have the same exact winning percentage after the regular season, the tiebreakers shall be used until one team is eliminated, at which point the tiebreaker between the remaining teams reverts to the first tiebreaker and the process continues until one team remains. If one team wins a multiple-team tiebreaker and is seeded, the remaining teams with an identical winning percentage go through the tiebreakers in a similar fashion until there is a single winner among the tied teams.

Example:

  • Three teams have the same winning percentage.
  • Team A has 30 points with six wins at 3-0 or 3-1, two wins at 3-2 and eight losses at 2-3. Team B and Team C have 21 points with seven wins at 3-0 or 3-1, one win at 3-2 and one loss at 2-3.
  • Team A is the highest seed and removed from the comparison
  • Since Team B and Team C have the same point total (reverting back to step one after Team A is eliminated), the next step is head-to-head results. Team C defeated Team B in three of four matches, so Team C would be seeded next followed by Team B.
